JOURNEY TO WORK
Conventional Wisdom?

We all have ‘beliefs’ about how people travel to work.

Information from the 1996, 2001 and 2006 Censuses  reveals many facts and trends which may challenge conventional wisdom. Many of these trends been published in the recent report “Journey to Work 1996 – 2006”.

In this seminar, John Davison, Senior Transport Data Analyst, Network and Asset Planning, VicRoads will present information that may challenge the  conventional wisdom beliefs on these topics:

• Do workers from outer areas dominate the numbers driving to work in the City?
• Are workers from inner areas more likely to use PT when travelling to work in the City?
• Are workers from outer areas driving to work over increasingly longer distances?
• Do workers from all areas mainly work in the City?
• Does every extra person walking or cycling to work mean an extra car off the road?
• Does the high supply of Public Transport and high population density in inner areas mean low
growth or declines in driving to work from these areas?
• Does having employment near railway stations mean that most people will travel to work using
   Public Transport to these locations?
• Would a Melbourne to Airport rail link service the needs of a major proportion of airport workers?
• Do workplaces within the City of Melbourne  always have Public Transport services that attract
   much more than average usage?
• Does a freeway extension mean a slump in usage of Public Transport to work for workers living near
   the new freeway?
• Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and LaTrobe Valley  persons employed in Melbourne
• Comparison Macedon Ranges & Mornington Peninsula employment destinations

This is a free seminar brought to you by the Institute of Transporation Engineers Australia & New Zealand and the Victorian Transport Branch of Engineers Australia.
